Firewall: The Movie

My family and I went to see Firewall last night.  If you haven't heard, the movie stars Harrison Ford as Jack Stanfield, V.P. of Landrock Pacific Bank.  In the movie, Jack is a from-the-trenches security professional and although I've heard that Ford is not particularly computer savvy, he does portray a realistic concern for managing risk.

The acting, IMHO, was excellent.  Ford was ideal for his role, Paul Bettany makes a great crook, and the other cast was excellent as well.

If you are expecting a technology movie, you'll be disappointed.  Although the movie is called "Firewall", there isn't a Firewall in sight.  The most technological moment included Ford reconfiguring a router/IDS/IPS (they were a bit vague on this, and threw around all of those terms) to block an attacker.

The Ethereal folks should be proud to know that their packet analyzer was shown in several shots being used to track an attacker.  All of the technology was portrayed correctly, even if product placement was prominent (how many people leave their desktops at the "Windows XP" splash?)

There were security-related problems with the plot, namely the fast-and-loose ability to transfer money between accounts.  Other things were implausible, but will be left unsaid as they would be a spoiler.

In the end, there were more positives than negatives, and I enjoyed the movie quite a bit.
